Description: Side A: Seated woman with fan, nude youth leaning on laver, young satyr with raised foot, holding situla and kantharos. Side B: Two draped youths each holding a stick in extended arm, facing each other.

Provenance/Ownership History: 1869, George Waddington (b. 1793 - d. 1869), Durham, England; 1869, bequeathed by Waddington to the Library of Durham Cathedral; 1936, sold by Durham Cathedral to John Hunt (b. 1900 -d. 1976), London; sold by Hunt through J. & S. Goldschmidt Galleries, New York, to William Randolph Hearst (b. 1863 - d. 1951), San Simeon, CA [see note 1]; after his death, transferred to the Hearst Corporation; April 5-6, 1963, Hearst sale, Parke-Bernet, New York, lot 90, sold to Edythe K. Shulman, Boston; by inheritance to her son, Seth Shulman, Washington, DC; 2010, gift of Seth Shulman to the MFA [see note 2]. (Accession Date: January 26, 2011) NOTES: [1] This is one of 23 vases from the Library of Durham Cathedral that were sold to Hunt to raise money for a 12th century manuscript of Bede's Life of Saint Cuthbert. Thanks to Alastair Fraser, Acting Assistant Librarian, Durham Cathedral Library, for providing this information. That Hearst bought the group from Goldschmidt is according to Mary Levkoff, "Hearst and the Antique," Apollo, October 2008, p. 56 and confirmed by records supplied by Hearst Castle, San Simeon, California. [2] The vase had been on loan to the MFA since 1979 (loan no. L-R 7.1979).
