Description: Woman's two piece dress (jacket and skirt) made of burgundy silk in satin and moire stripes, trimmed with floral velvet and lace. Hip-length jacket has center front button closure, trimmed with with bands of velvet and lace, and long sleeves trimmed likewise with velvet and lace. Long full swagged skirt splits in front to show velvet trim. Tapes/button on inside of skirt used to form back bustle. Label inside jacket (petersham) reads: "M. Switzer 140 5th Av. N.Y." Dress was worn by donor's great, grandmother Alma Louise Morgan Coddington of New York City, NY.
Provenance/Ownership History: About 1880, purchased by Anna Louise Morgan Coddington (b. 1855 - d. 1927), New York, NY from M. Switzer; given by descent within the family to her daughter Caroline Gladys Coddington Sulzer (b. 1890 - d. 1974); given by descent within the family to her daughter Caroline Coddington Sulzer MacColl; November 1, 1972, given by descent within the family to her daughter Heather Wishik, Provincetown, MA; 2012, given by Heather Wishik to the MFA.
