Chère Madame
Je reviens à l’instant d’un rapide voyage en Hollande ou j’ai été célébrer la fête du 14 juillet et je trouve deux gracieuses lettres de vous. Je suis enchanté d’apprendre que vous êtes à Dinard car nous nous venons certainement, quoique je ne puisse pas accepter votre charment offre d’hospitalité.
Voici pourquoi. Je dois être à Venise dans les premières semaines d’Août et je dois terminer le portrait de Mme Gautreau à Paramé tout à l’heure. Elle m’a promis de poser matin et soir pendant une ou deux semaines et je devais déjà être installé chez elle, mais la nouvelle d’une fluxion ou quelque chose que la défigurait m’a décidé il y a huit jours à peu près d’aller faire mon petite visite à Amsterdam avec quelques amis.
Le portrait est déjà envoyé là-bas et je vais le suivre bientôt.
De Paramé à Dinard il n’y a qu’une demi heure de sorti que vous me verrez souvent. Et puis vous devez aller voir les Gautreau.
Merci encore une fois, d’être toujours hospitalière et bonne pour moi.

Dear Madam,
I just returned from a quick trip to Holland where I celebrated the July 14th holiday and I have found your two gracious letters. I am pleased to learn that you are at Dinard as we will certainly come, although I cannot accept your charming offer of hospitality.
Here’s why. I must be in Venice in the first weeks of August and I must finish the portrait of Mme Gautreau at Paramé right away. She promised me that she will pose morning and night for a week or two and I should already be set up at her place, but the news of an inflammation or something disfiguring her made up my mind about eight days ago to make a little visit to Amsterdam with some friends.
The portrait has already been sent there and I will follow it soon.
From Paramé to Dinard is only a half-hour’s trip so you will see me frequently. And then you must go see the Gautreaus.
Thank you once again for always being so welcoming and good to me.
