The left sheet of the diptych was recycled, without any alterations, from an earlier production, in which the same actor had played the same role, at the Ichimura Theater in 1857. See 11.44296a-c for the first version.

本図は安政4年10月市村座「伊達競阿国戯場」時のものを再利用し、文久2年4月市村座「伊達競阿国歌舞妓」上演時に右図を<1>河原崎権十郎の荒獅子男之助から<8>片岡仁左衛門の松ヶ枝的之助へ変更し、左図は変更せずにそのまま用いたと思われる。

[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
