文政3年3月、大坂、角の芝居「義経千本桜(よしつねせんぼんざくら)」の二段目最初の「伏見稲荷(ふしみいなり)」の場。「鳥居前」とも呼ばれるこの場を象徴して鳥居の柱が描かれている。なお芝居では静御前(しずかごぜん)と呼ぶのが一般的である。
藤太が静を襲うところへ忠信が助けにあらわれる。忠信の姿には火焔隈(かえんくま)、化粧襷(けしょうだすき)、菱川(ひしかわ)の鬘(かつら)といった荒事のエッセンスがつまっている。 -- 武藤 純子K

[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
