Description(Boston: E. W. Walker & Co., 1889) 33 cm., two vols.; (v. 1) viii, [20-]528 pp., plus plates; (v. 2) vii, [529-]1004 pp., plus plates; contemporary half gilt-stamped red morocco, purple cloth boards.

The subtitle states "By the best art writers, fully illustrated with etchings, photo-etchings, photogravures, phototypes, and engravings on steel and wood. For this entry, only the actual engravers and etchers were compiled. For the most part, they are reproductive, after the works of the painters, sculptors, and draftsmen discussed in the 95 different chapters of the book. Chapters 35-42 (pp. 401-528) comprise "Linton's History of Wood Engraving in America." A few chapters describe private collections.

The publisher E. W. Walker & Co. copyrighted the entire publication; however, the second volume cites S. Walker & Co. on the title page.
