Apostle spoon

The spoon has a fig-shaped bowl and a flattened, tapering hexagonal stem. The finial depicts Saint Thomas holding a spear in his right hand. The nimbus is rayed. The bowl and stem of the spoon are forged from a single piece. The apostle figure and nimbus are cast separately and applied. The finial is gilt. The bowl has been reworked.

In bowl, leopard's head crowned; on back of stem near bowl, maker's mark fringed S (Kent, 1981, p. 9); lion passant; date letter H

Provenance

Marsden J. Perry, Providence, Rhode Island; Mrs. Howard Eric, Stamford, Conneticut. December 2, 1949, Parke-Bernet Sale, New York, lot 75, sold to the MFA and purchased with the Theodora Wilbour Fund in memory of Charlotte Beebe Wilbour for $5,000 [see note 1]. (December 12, 1949)
