DescriptionBuddhist priest's stole (ôhi) with decoration of chrysanthemums and peonies. Center, border: Light green silk ground with woven-in designs of chrysanthemum and peony branches, and reversed swastikas in supplementary wefts of flat gold-leafed paper thread. Three-harness warp-faced twill weave with alternating patterns of chrysanthemums and peonies and reversed swastika motifs placed on either side of the chrysanthemums. Shiten: Red silk figured satin ground with chrysanthemum arabesques and floral roundels. Lining: Green plain-weave silk. MFA structural analysis: Silk, gilt paper; 2/1 twill weave with continuous supplementary wefts bound in 1/2 twill order; pieced and appliquéd.
