DescriptionThe rectangular cabinet is veneered with late seventeenth-century Chinese lacquer which has been used to decorate both the interior and the exterior of the cabinet. The high relief lacquer decoration on the two exterior doors depicts a continuous landscape of mountains amidst clouds with a body of water, trees, buildings, and trees in the foreground. The lacquer on each exterior side of the cabinet includes a fan decorated with flowers on a gold ground with a square panel of calligraphy below. The gilt-brass hardware is decorated with engraved scrolling flowers on a punched ground; the hinges terminate in openwork which also enframes the keyhole escutcheon. The gilding is very worn. On the interior of each door are two gold-ground fans with calligraphic decoration. The eleven drawers are veneered with an overall decoration of four landscape panels and scrolling decoration at the sides and bottom, all of which are in terrupted by the gilt edges of the panels separating the drawers. The gilt woodstand, executed in the floral baroque style, is composed of scrolling openwork aprons with two cherubs at the center, and reverse-scroll legs carved with flowers at the knee and acanthus leaf decoration.
