One of a set of six candlesticks, a pair with 1993.345.2. The tall shaped circular molded base has alternating palm branches, shells, and blank cartouches surrounded by leaves. Above this is a band of guilloche with four rosettes and foliage. The spirally fluted dome rises to a shaped triangular knop resting onscrolling foliage with a guilloche band above. The knop gives way to a shaped triangular stem with a base of shells on calyx and cast and chased husk and l eaf patterning surmounted by masks surrounded by foliage and husk on four sides and chased fluting on the other, smaller, four. The shoulder is molded and each corner is covered by a leaf. The stem gives way to a small reeded knop. The nozzle is banded with a base of cast and chased foliage on a matted ground, and a guilloche rim.

Markings

Maker's Mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, EG, a rayed sun (Dennis, 176). Warden's Mark: 1753-1754: a crowned N (Dennis, 194). Charge Mark: 1750-1756: a crowned A with palm and laurel branches (Dennis, 112). Discharge mark: forsmall work, 1750-1756: a hen's head (Dennis, 194). Other: Guarantee mark used after 1838: a small crab (Tardy, p. 173). The Maker's, Warden's and Discharge Marks are on the interior rim and the bottom of the base, the Warden's and Ma ker's marks are also in the nozzle, while the Discharge and Guarantee marks are on the rim of the base.
