DescriptionThis pottery lid of a canopic jar is shaped in the form of a human head with false beard. The face is well modelled and has been painted yellow. The hair is black with apparent blue ground most evident near the ears. The eyes are white and black. Areas of glaze and paint have worn, but much remains, and the lid is in generally good condition.
ProvenanceBy 1836: Robert Hay Collection, Linplum, Scotland; 1863: to his son, Robert James Alexander Hay; 1868-1872: Way Collection, Boston (purchased by Samuel A. Way through London dealers Rollin and Feuardent, 27 Haymarket); 1872: given to the MFA by Samuel's son, C. Granville Way.
