DescriptionThe rectangular filigree chest (1976.608a) is architectural in form. A shaped plinth rests on four ball feet. Four columns stand on the plinth framing the rectangular container. The cover is a rooflike structure, of shaped outline, with an interior compartment that may be accessed from a hidden sliding panel. A filigree caddy spoon (1976.608c) and oval covered basket (1976.608b) are concealed in the top compartment. The cover is hinged and opens to reveal the silver canister fitted inside. The chest is made of assembled filigree panels, each formed of tightly scrolled drawn and tooled wire. Broader strands of polished wire in the center of each panel from double scrolls, and the outer edges of each panel are framed in plain wire. The silver canister (1976.609), formed from pieces of sheet, is rectangular with a hinged, shaped cover. The highly polished plain surface is engraved and chased with a chain pattern along the borders, and the front and back panels have an engraved oval containing a gilt urn against a rayed ground. The side panels are filled with a gilt circle containing an engraved floral motif. The interior of the box is lead-lined.
