DescriptionThis skyphos sits atop a conical foot and is covered by a lid with a ring-shaped handle. While the handles on the skyphos and the lid are painted red, the rest of the exterior of the vessel is painted in a glazing technique known as ‘marbling’, which produces wave-like lines that run along the surface. These lines range in color from pale red to dark brown. While the skyphos is a typically Greek shape, the conical foot and marbling decoration are distinctly Lydian. As a result, this vessel demonstrates the Lydian adaptation of a Greek form.
