Epitaphios, for Eastern Orthodox Church. Central panel, the descent from the cross. At Jesus’s head, the Virgin Mary, Mary Salome (?) and Mary Magdelene; at His feet, Joseph of Arimathea, John the Apostle and Nicodemus. All with intitials in their hallows. Foreground, a Russian inscription and three large urns. Background, the cross and ladder, seraphim and, overlapping into the border, God the Father with a shaft of gold, bearing a bird, traveling from his mouth downward. Damask floral border with incriptions from John XX.40-42 and a medallion in each corner bearing one of the four evangelists. Metallic outer lace probably a later addition. Polychrome silk and metallic yarns on a tan silk ground.
