In response to the devastating violence in former Yugoslavia, Ristelhueber set out to create a work that would address the horror of brutality among neighbors turned enemies. With great clarity she made close-up photographs of the recently stitched bodies of patients of Paris hospitals. Every One is the artist's only figurative work to date, but on this scale, the human form also appears like a ruptured and violated landscape. To show her solidarity with the city under siege, Ristelhueber traveled to Sarajevo in 1994, exhibiting one of the images from the recently completed Every One at an art center there.
