A collar is indicated by incision. The dog is looking up and backwards. He could have been standing beside a larger figure of Diana. All the feet are missing. Fine dark green patina, with light areas and hard, earthy encrustation, especially at the base of the neck.

Provenance

By 1887: with Luigi Boccanera (said to be from the sanctuary of Diana at Nemi); March 25, 1888: purchased by R. Lanciani from Luigi Boccanera; purchased by MFA from R. Lanciani, 1888, for $493.92 (this figure is the total price of MFA 88.538–88.644 and 89.9–89.31)
