DescriptionRim sherd of a Chian, probably black-figured, Sphinx and Lion Style pottery dinos with white slip. The exterior is decorated with a double guilloche pattern with traces of added red on central dots, between narrow lines. Below this, at junction with body, there is a black band above band of short vertical strokes. At the far lower left there is a single dot and painted decoration consisting of undetermined motif, possibly part of a lion or sphinx's tail.
ProvenanceFrom Naukratis. 1885: excavated by William Matthew Flinders Petrie for the Egypt Exploration Fund, assigned to the EEF by the Egyptian government; October 28, 1885: voted to the MFA at EEF general meeting; sent over February 1886. (Accession date: 1886).
