This statue is a later marble version of Washington’s portrait on the colossal bronze equestrian figure by the same artist, which was erected in Boston’s Public Garden in 1869. In this bust, Ball has succeeded in capturing the great patriot’s character and expression with a style that is both naturalistic and dramatic.
