In Gift from the Sea #2, wood-turner Derek Bencomo evokes the sea breeze and ocean waves of Hawaii with his careful carving. Bencomo relocated to Maui in 1984, finding his hometown of Los Angeles too stifling. The natural landscape, particularly that of the beach and the ocean, inspires his practice. His work, self-described as a sculptural “dance,” is free-flowing and seeks to replicate the balance and harmony he finds in nature.

DescriptionTurned vessel, very loose form. Smoothly flowing waves and projections of wood make up rim. Six randomly spaced and shaped feet on base. Two natural holes in body. Signed and dated.
