Sculpture

Small figure of Harpocrates on horseback. He is represented as a plump child, with the child’s lock of hair and the two crowns of Egypt on his head. The forefinger on his lips is meant to emphasize his youth, but was usually interpreted by the Greeks as an admonition to silence about his mysteries. Reddish brown clay, summarily modeled in front, and rounded off in back; round vent. Small fragment missing in front.

Alexandria, Egypt
