Bronze, cast, on circular mound, brass astrolabe in full round. Mounted on earlier pedestal, truncated molded bell on 3 turtles, lettering: ATLAS HUMERIS COELUM SUSTINET in one line over alternating masks & coats-of-arms joined by garlands.

Dr. Eduard Simon (b. 1864 - d. 1929), Berlin; October 10-11, 1929, Simon sale, Cassirer and Helbing, Berlin, lot 51. 1955, Eugene L. Garbáty (b. 1880 - d. 1966), East Norwalk, CT [see note 1]; 1955, sold by Garbáty to the MFA for $1700. (Accession Date: December 8, 1955)

NOTES:
[1] Garbáty emigrated from Berlin to New York between 1938 and 1939, bringing much of his art collection with him. It is probable, though not securely documented, that he had acquired this already by 1938.
