みやま路をかきわけ尋ねゆきミれバ
 わしのいわ屋にひゞく滝つせ

奉額 木からしや仏を囲ふ屏風岩

秩父重忠臣本多次郎親常

秩父の重忠/霊夢の告によつて/当山に田獵をせしに/遥の梢に鷲の巣に/篭れるを見つけて/親常に命じて/射さしめしに其/矢一本としてあだ矢/なく当るといへどもミな/はね反るがゆへ重忠ふしぎに/思ひてその巣を取おろさせて/見けれバ巣のうちに聖観音の/尊像れいれいとして在せしかバ霊夢を/感得して郷民にこれを拝さすれバ古へ/当山に寺院これありて行基の刻せし/観音の霊像ありしが承平五年相馬の/将門の兵乱に国中の神社仏閣/廃壊に及びしと古老の/物語これあれバあら有/がたやふしぎや是こそその/尊像にましませりといふをもて重忠/いよいよ信じて急ぎ御堂を建立してより重忠の/一門残らず帰依しけれバ其霊験また鏡にむかふが/如くなりしとぞ当山の奥の院に重忠の/馬繋親常の矢の跡なぞといふ/旧跡あげてかぞへがたし

[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
