Illustrations of classically-influenced novel, derived from original Italian illustrations of 1499 (Hypnerotomachia Poliphili).
Third edition of Beroalde's edition of Colonna's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, identified by the woodcut headpiece with the royal arms and crowned Ls of Louis XIII, thus dating it after 1610 (see Mortimer 148). The woodcut illustrations are for the most part the same as cut for the Kerver edition of 1546 (Mortimer 145), attributed to Cousin and/or Goujon. The engraved title with alchemical symbols is lacking in this copy; it had first appeared in Beroalde's first edition of 1600. This copy consists of an unidentified architectural portal motif, onto which has been pasted the text portion only of the 1600 title.
