Carved ivory statuette. Madonna holds infant in left arm, glancing left. Ornately robed and draped with delicately carved ornamentation showing tiny faces at collar and waist of robe. Veil at back of head held by garland, tiny star on forehead. She stands on moon, with winged cherub’s head showing under right foot. Base of reddish marble. Condition: checking throughout ivory from age; Madonna’s left arm, child’s head and arms broken off. Many small chips and cracks.


1965, sold by Mathias Komor (b. 1909 -d. 1984), New York, to Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Work, Lincoln, MA [see note 1]; 1980, gift of Mr. and Mrs. Work to the MFA. (Accession Date: October 15, 1980)
