This figure demonstrates the many ways artists appropriated and transformed visual elements from the West and other parts of Africa. Judging by the pith helmet, buttoned-down jacket, and short, belted trousers, the rider may be a European. But the piece’s forward-moving stance reminds of “riders of power,” a genre of African sculpture associated with leadership.
