DescriptionThe shallow bowl of finely burled wood has a low plain foot. The rim is fitted with a flaring silver-gilt band that is stamped with two bands of crosses formed of tiny pellets. Between the bands is a wriggle work pattern of a wavy line and semicircles with rays resembling sunflowers. At the Center of the bowl is a gilt-silver molded boss, or "print," that is fitted in the center with a white silver disk engraved with the sacred monogram, IHS, enclosed in two interlocking squares.
The wood bowl is turned. There is a large crack near the rim and worm damage under the "print. " The silver rim, which is formed and seamed, is pinned to the bowl in several places. The decoration on the rim is chased, stamped, and engraved. The gilding has been renewed.
