Medallion showing St. Francis. Polychrome silks and gilded yarns embroidered on coarse tabby-woven linen ground, except in flesh areas where ground is fine silk taffeta; long flat stitches, couching, and split stitch. Background resembles loose or nué technique. The Saint, in brown habit, with golden halo and cross, stands in center foreground, against a background of green hills, white buildings, blue mountains and sky. Yellow frame-like border. Probably once part of an altar frontal or dorsal.
