Provenance

During the Nara period (710 – 784) possibly brought to Japan by a Korean envoy from Silla [see note 1]. 1908, purchased in Japan by Okakura Kakuzo (b. 1862 - d. 1913, aka Okakura Tenshin), Boston; 1921, gift of the estate of Okakura Kakuzo to Edward Jackson Holmes (b. 1873 - d. 1950), Boston; 1932, gift of Holmes to the MFA (Accession Date: December 1, 1932).
