Kikugorô III had officially retired from the stage in 1847.7, but he returned under the name Ôkawa Hashizô I in 1848.4 and continued to act until his death in 1849.4. The text on this print describes his death while travelling on the Tôkaidô Road, at Kakegawa Station.
Onoe Baikô IV, shown here watering a chrysanthemum in honor of his illustrious predecessor, became Onoe Kikugorô IV in 1855.9 and kept the name until his death in 1860.
