Mourning embroidery with woman standing under willow tree to left of tomb, large tree to right, cypress or popular trees in background, flowers in foreground. On face of tomb: “SACRED to the Memory of Nathaniel Austin OB 11 May 1807 AE 43 YRs.” Silk floss and chenille yarns embroidered on silk plain weave ground; sky, woman’s head and hands painted. Painted glass with gold inscription on black border: “SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF NATHANIEL AUSTIN./THE SWEET REMEMBRANCE OF THE JUST/SHALL FOURISH WHILST THEY SLEEP IN DUST.” Original gilt-wood frame.
