Obverse: Profile bust of Nicholas I looking to proper left; inscribed in Cyrillic at edge at edge ["His Imperial Majesty Nikolai I. Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russians"] and under bust ["G Theodor Tolstoi"].

Reverse: Helmeted woman wearing classical gown seated frontally on throne with a spear, shield, and an owl at proper left and holding a wreath in her right hand over a two-headed herme; inscribed in Cyrillic above ["To the founder and protectors"], on throne's plinth, and in exergue ["The Imperial Academy of Sciences of St. Petersburg. December XXIX day. MDCCCXXVI."].
