DescriptionShaped and footed domed circular bases in three lobes decorated with cast and chased shell, floral and foliate rocialle scorlling spiraling to a baluster-shaped stem and a waisted socket. Four acanthus clad scrolling branches - three vertical serpentine brances and a central branch rising slightly higher.
Marks
Marked on underside of base with maker's mark (CH/I) and with assay mark (a 13 and a D separated by a pair of crossed swords for Dresden, 18th century, with indication fo fineness 13. No date letter mark. Underside of each base is engraved with a royal cypher (interlaced AR3) for August III, King of Poland, Inventory numbers are engraved on the underside of the base and on the tube of arms on each piece, 22 on one, 24 on the other
ProvenanceAbout 1745-1750, made for Augustus III (Friedrich August II), Elector of Saxony and King of Poland (b. 1696 - d. 1763), Dresden and Warsaw (original commission) [see note 1]. 1966, Paul Drey Gallery, New York; 1966, sold by Drey to William Appleton Coolidge (b. 1901 - d. 1992), Topsfield and Cambridge, MA; 1984, gift of William Appleton Coolidge to the MFA. [1] The undersides of the bases of this pair of candelabra (MFA accession nos. 1984.186 and 1984.187) are engraved with the royal cypher (AR3, for Augustus III) and inventory numbers (22 and 24). Other candelabra from the same set are known; they may have been part of a group commissioned from Christian Heinrich Ingermann in 1745. See Peter C.
