Italian, 17th century design of possibly later workmanship. Panel, part of a table cover.
Long, narrow panel of natural tabby linen, pieced with a narrow strip at one end. One long side and both ends embroidered with cream sils in satin stitch: border shows pairs of peacocks and smaller birds flanking a tree, all conventionalized. This unit is repeated alternately in opposite directions along the length of the border. A line of crude needle point lace with tassels, made of the cream silk, trims the same three edges. Linen browned; a few brown stains.
