DescriptionPrinted in Sendai. In the lower right corner is the logo of the sponsor.
From an album of 10 prints of Sendai festival float designs, 11.45791.1 to .10; RES.26.2 appears to be another work of the same kind.
According to Asano, there are 3 different types of these prints, in chronological order: (1) both the title and the name of the sponsor appear at the edge of the design without any cartouche; (2) the title is in a cartouche, but the name of the sponsor is not (one such print is dated 1839); and (3) both the title and the name of the sponsor are enclosed by a cartouche. RES.26.2 is Type 1 and 11.45791.1 to .10 are all Type 3.

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
