Circular medal of Pope Pius IX (1792-1878).

Obverse: Profile bust of Pius IX looking to proper left; inscribed at edge “[rosette] PIVS·IX·PON·MAX·AN·L·EX·QVO·SACRATVS·EST·EPISCOPVS [rosette]” and under bust “SPERANZA”.

Reverse: Pope seated on throne with dove and rays of light above and five crowned women (representing the continents?) before him; inscribed below “GALLI·INV·SPERANZA” and in exergue “LAETAMINI·IN·DOMINO/QVIA·DEDIT·VOBIS/DOCTOREM·IVST·/JOEL·II·23·”.

Inscription
