Obverse: Profile bust of Pius IX looking to proper left; inscribed at edge “PIVS IX PONT MAX·ANNO II·” and under bust “G·GIROMETTI·F·”.

Reverse: Statue of Saint Peter on plinth at proper right and statue of Saint Paul on plinth at proper left from the main steps of St. Peter’s Basilica; inscribed at edge “BASIL·VATICANAE DECVS·ADDITVM” and in exergue “A·MDCCCXLVII”.
