Obverse: Profile bust of Pius IX looking to proper left; inscribed at edge “PIVS IX·PONTIFEX MAXIMVS AN·XII” and under bust “P·G·F”.

Reverse: Winged female seated on steam powered cart, holding Mercury’s staff; inscribed above “PROVIDENTIA P·M·FERREA VIA ROMAN PROVINCILS IVNCI CVRAVIT”, below “P GIROMETTI F”, and in exergue “AN·MDCCCLVI”.

Inscription
