Pinkish-red silk whole cloth bedcover with central medallion and geometric patterned quilting. Pinkish-red silk plain weave lining. Belonged to Increase Sumner; said to have been used by him upon taking oath of office for governor for third time, Dudley Street, Roxbury, 1799. Whole cloth quilt.

Said to have belonged to Increase Sumner (1746-1799), Governor of Massachusetts from 1797 until his death in 1799; Inherited by his great-granddaughter Miss Georgiana Welles Sargent (born 1858) of New York City; Gift of Emily Welles Robbins (Mrs. Harry Pelham Robbins) and the Hon. Sumner Welles, in memory of Georgiana Welles Sargent, to MFA 1949
