Jewelry, The Ancient World



Intaglio. Ring with oval bezel. Motif oriented horizontally. A lion facing left, holds a dolphin, facing right, down with its paws, and bites its back. Front paws placed on either side of jaws; back left paw positioned on dolphin’s head. Lion is in profile except for its large head, which in frontal. Lion’s ribs and vertebrae are clearly visible; it has a shaggy mane, wide-set eyes, large nose, and furry belly.
