Looking up to left, book in right hand. Figure from a Crucifixion group. Set with 55.468-470.
These three mourning figures would have been grouped below a crucifix, with the image of Christ carved in ivory and mounted on a cross, possibly made of ebony. The forceful expressiveness of posture and gesture recall monumental works of sculpture, while the intricacy of detail demonstrates the sculptor’s virtuosity in carving precious ivory.
By 1955, with Nicolas E. Landau, Paris; 1955, sold by Landau to the MFA for 480,000 fr. (includes 55.468 and 55.470). (Accession date: September 15, 1955).
