DescriptionOne of a pair (with 2001.64.2). Oval, double-lipped body raised on four lion's paw feet entwined with tails and with lion masks at the head. Wavy gadrooned rims. Tall central handle engraved with a coat of arms within the garter of the Order of the Bath, flanked by supporters with a motto below.

Struck under bases with hallmarks (leopard's head, lion passant, date letter for 1741-2) and with maker's mark of Peter Archambo I.
InscriptionsThe arms are those of Stanhope, probably as borne by Sir William Stanhope, a Knight of the Bath and brother of Philip, 4th Earl of Chesterfield.
