DescriptionOne of a pair (with 2001.63.1). One of a pair (with 2001.63.2). Oval body with auricular sprialing shell raised on four splayed shell-form feet representing shells. Chased under the lip with rococo ornament and scalework. The handle in the form of a putto busts extending from a lion mask. Engraved under the lip with a crest and motto.

Marks Struck under bases with hallmarks (leopard's head, lion passant, date letter for 1740-41) and with maker's mark of Paul de Lamerie.
InscriptionsThe crest and motto are those of Gordon.
ProvenanceOctober 24, 1985, sold by a "lady" at Sotheby's, London, lot 403, where most probably bought by Alan and Simone Hartman, New York, NY; 2001, gift of Alan and Simone Hartman. (Accession date: February 21, 2001)
