The face of the circular seal depicts the arms of Browne quartering fifteen others surmounted by a coronet, helm, crest, and mantling with the motto, Veritate Duce. The supporters, two lynxes, are shown with a plain collar and a line. The seal has a hinged semicircular handle on the reverse. The seal is carved; the handle and hinge are fabricated and applied.

About 1630, Francis Browne (b. 1610 - d. 1682), 3rd Viscount Montagu, Cowdray House, Sussex (original commission) [see note 1]. 1982, Brand Inglis, Ltd., London; 1982, sold by Brand Inglis to the MFA. (Accession Date: December 8, 1982)

NOTES:
[1] The arms on this seal are his. It may have been made upon his succession to the title of Viscount Montagu, with the death of his father in 1629.
