Medium or Technique

Fritware with minai type low-temperature decoration. Overglaze Ilkhanid enamels - the Mongol successors of the earlier minai ware - were often dominated by a dark blue ground, and have been called lajvardina wares, after the color of lapis lazuli. The present much brighter palette may reflect a later taste.

This 4-sided tile fragment is missing a corner, but it clearly was one of many shapes making up a complex decorative pattern. The decoration of stylized vegetal forms is carried out in light blue, black, white and red.
