Warp: wool and silk. Main weft: cotton; pattern weft: wool. Large rectangular shawl woven with polychrome wool threads on Jacquard loom. Design incorporates romanticized Indo-Persian ornament and Greek and Egyptian revival architecture, elongated buteh motifs, and parade of elephants, camels, horses, and oriental figures. Self-borders of colored niches (nuhrabs) containing European birds and vases of flowers. Thought to have been exhibited at the Paris exhibition of 1867. Another shawl of same design in Yale University Art Gallery. Condition: excellent.
