DescriptionThis plate was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1861 under "H. Dean," the anagram of Haden.
"The detail of SHERE MILL POND would be beyond my powers now. On the other hand it is not so good a plate in the true artistic sense as say an ESSEX FARM. It is also a long way behind such a plate as CHALLOW FARM or as WAREHAM BRIDGE and immeasurably inferior to a LANCASHIRE RIVER. For all that 'SHERE' will always be a popular plate and will maintain its value. Moreover it will shortly be a very rare plate seeing that it was destroyed when there were yet 40 impressions to be taken from it to make up the 250 [Études copies] provided for."
Of the rebiting of the plate Goulding wrote to Haden: "About 1881 you rebit 'Shere Mill Pond,' and we printed a day's work from it on the day of the great blizzard. I remember it so well, as when I arrived home at night my people had to throw me out a spade, and I had to dig my way through the snow before I could get into the house. It is my impression that you were afterwards dissatisfied with the tirage and destroyed them all as well as the plate." (Hardie, Goulding, 55.)
Published in Études à l'Eau-forte (no. XXI). The remaining work in the sky removed. Some of the later impressions show wear on the tall, thin trees to the left.
