Limewood, painted white, standing on carved base doweled to square plinth: flat back. Inscription on bottom says: /Bought as 12th century at Hotel Drouot, 1870 / SPRING is female figure holding spray of flowers. Set with 62.664-6.
1870, sold at Hôtel Drouot, Paris, evidently to an English-speaking collector [see note 1]. 1962, Arcade Gallery, London; 1962, sold by Arcade Gallery to the MFA for £260 [see note 2]. (Accession Date: September 19, 1962)
 According to English-language inscriptions on the bases of each of the Four Seasons (MFA nos. 62.663-666), they were purchased at a sale held at Drouot in 1870, and were believed to date from the 12th century.  MFA accession nos. 62.663-62.666 were purchased together for this amount.
