Painting or sculpture? Benglis defied convention by “painting” monumental sculptures, explaining, “they’re painterly, yet they’re dimensional...I do think of myself as a painter.” For pieces like Wing, Benglis poured liquid polyurethane that hardened, freezing a gesture. She later cast the pieces in solid aluminum to parody the hefty, often geometric metal works popular among male artists in the late 1960s.
