Embroidered wool Kashmir dress. Neutral orange with embroidery in 3 shdes of blue silk. Very short bodice, short puffed sleeves, fullness of skirt in back. Embroidery on bodice arranged in narrow bands of trefoil and bead motives on sleeves, around neck and waist; deep embroidered border around bottom of skirt in design of scrolling stems with 2 types of decorative foliage, scalloped edge, rectangular blocks of fringe. Mended in a number of places. Worn by Elizabeth Knapp (Mrs. Lemuel) Shaw (1784-1822), mother-in-law of Herman Melville.
