Form-fitting evening dress made of dark purple silk knit, embroidered with pink and purple flowers around the scoop neckline, with sheer silk tulle back panel embroidered with hummingbird and floral design. Hummingbird embroidered on lower center-right side of dress. Slight train in back. Zipper and clear plastic snaps on right side. One interior label: John/Galliano/Paris.”


March 18, 1999, anonymous sale, Christie's, New York, "Unforgettable: Fashion of the Oscars," lot 54, purchased by Judith Krupp, Wellesley, MA [see note 1]; gift of Krupp to the MFA (Accession date: April 14, 2010)

[1] This dress was sold as part of a benefit auction for AMFAR held by Christies in which dresses worn to the Academy Awards were sold. This dress was lot 54, a "Mystery Dress," which would be worn by an unnamed star at the upcoming Oscar ceremony that year. Cate Blanchett ultimately wore this dress and the Jimmy Choo shoes also included in this gift to the ceremony on Sunday, March 21, 1999 where she was nominated for Best Actress for her role in "Elizabeth."
